Douglas Thompson at the Inverness Book Festival @ La Scala Cinema
Aug 20 @ 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm

Douglas ThompsonDouglas Thompson’s short stories have appeared in a wide range of magazines and anthologies. His first book, Ultrameta, was published by Eibonvale Press in August 2009, nominated for the Edge Hill Prize and shortlisted for the British Fantasy Society Best Newcomer Award. Since then he has published four subsequent novels. The Brahan Seer is his sixth novel.

Executed at Chanonry Point, Fortrose, for witchcraft in the late 17th century, the shadowy historical figure of the Brahan Seer foretold the Battle of Culloden, the invention of the railways and canals, the Second World War and even the creation of the Channel Tunnel. Described by Thompson himself as a historical literary novel (with supernatural overtones) this fascinating book begins to question whether our current understanding of time is quite as safe and scientifically sound as we think it is…

As part of the Inverness Book Festival 2014, Douglas will be interviewed by Inverness based journalist and broadcaster Roddy Maclean

Launch of Future Perfect in Saffron Walden @ Intelligent Penguin
Dec 11 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Future Perfect cover imageKatrina MountfortKatrina Mountfort will be launching her debut novel Future Perfect on the evening of December 11th in Saffron Walden at Intelligent Penguin in Gold Street.

Future Perfect is the first book in the Blueprint Trilogy which takes us to a future in which men and women are almost identical, and personal relationships are forbidden. Following a bio-terrorist attack, the population now lives within comfortable Citidomes. MindValues advocate acceptance and non-attachment. The BodyPerfect cult encourages a tall thin androgynous appearance, and looks are everything. A dark undercurrent runs through the trilogy: the enforcement of conformity through fear, the fostering of distorted and damaging attitudes towards forbidden love, manipulation of appearance and even the definition of beauty. Join Katrina to celebrate the launch of her book with a drink, hear a reading, buy a copy and have it signed! What better way to spend a December evening?

It’s also worth saying a big thank you to Intelligent Penguin, a digital agency, who offered the use of their venue in exchange for a donation to a charity of Katrina’s choice. In keeping with the themes of the book, Katrina chose Beat, a charity providing helplines, online support and a network of UK-wide self-help groups to help adults and young people in the UK beat their eating disorders.

When Connor and Logan Cardwain, a gangster’s lieutenants, steal a shipment of high-grade narcotics on the orders of their boss, Connor dreams of diverting the profits and setting up in business for himself. His plans encounter a hurdle in the form of Éloise Falavière, Logan’s former girlfriend, who has been hired by an interplanetary police force’s vice squad.

Logan wants a family; Éloise wants to stop the drugs shipment from being sent to her home planet; Connor wants to gain independence without angering his boss. All of their plans are derailed, though, when they discover that the shipment was hiding a much deadlier secret – the prototype of a tiny superweapon powerful enough to destabilise galactic peace.

Crime lords, corrupt officials and interstellar magicians are soon pursuing them, and Connor, Logan and Éloise realise they have to identify and confront the superweapon’s smuggler in order to survive. But when, one by one, their friends begin to betray them, their self-imposed mission transforms from being difficult to near-impossible.

Sailor to a Siren will be available in popular eBook formats from all good eBook retailers.

Sailor to a Siren – Launch party @ Novacon 45
Nov 14 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

If you’re going to be at Novacon 45 in Nottingham over the weekend of the 14/15th November, come and join us for our party on Saturday evening and also for our three book launches over the weekend.

Zoë SumraOn Saturday morning from 11-12 in the Downstairs Bar we’ll be launching Sailor to a Siren by Zoë Sumra. This is a space opera novel with significant nods to the gangland thriller genre. It’s a great debut from Zoë and establishes her as a name to watch in epic space opera. The depth of her characters, the breadth of her world-building, the ambition and longevity of her story-arcs spanning multiple generations of families, all make this a first step in what is likely to be a fascinating and enthralling universe. As Jaine Fenn said “If you like your space opera fast and violent, this book is for you”.

There will be drinks, books and Zoë (obviously – although as she’s very pregnant at the moment I suppose there’s a chance she might go into labour early and have to give it a miss).

While we’re at FantasyCon we will be having a launch party for our two latest fantasy titles.

Mandigo and the Hellhounds, by Anders Reemark, is the book in the Mandigo trilogy. Translated from the Danish by Nina Sokol it is a classic epic fantasy story, suitable for younger readers but just as gripping for older readers.

When he was eight, Mandigo found a baby on a raft in the river and carried her to Greta, the wise woman who lived in the forest. By the time he was twelve, Greta had taught him some magic, but an evil force was looking for the baby and Greta decided to leave for the baby’s safety. Mandigo would have liked to go with her but his world is suddenly turned upside down with the arrival of a fearsome knight accompanied by a pack of Hellhounds…

The launch party is in the Harbourlights Restaurant in the Grand Hotel from 12-1pm on Saturday. If you’re coming to FantasyCon, please join us at the party.
