Sanem Ozdural, author of LiGa™, speaking at Words and Music Festival in New Orleans @ Words and Music festival
Nov 30 @ 9:45 am – 11:00 am

Sanem Ozdural, author of LiGa™, will be speaking at the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society Words and Music Festival in New Orleans, at 09:45am on Friday 30 November 2012 in the Queen Ann Ballroom of the Hotel Monteleone:

LITERATURE OUT OF TIME
The Art of Using Fiction as a Magic Carpet for Time Travel

Transporting the reader to another time, another world, even worlds that are still in the future, with the reader eagerly stepping aboard the author’s time travel vehicle is a special kind of magic. And it’s the kind of magic that can make or break speculative fiction. New Orleans fiction writer Moira Crone and debut novelist Sanem Ozdural will discuss the art of exploring the future with fiction.

Ms. Ozdural, a practicing attorney who cut her legal teeth as a prosecutor with the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office, is author of LiGa (acronym for Life Game), a novel about a game of the future where the coin is extra years of life.

Both authors, keen observers of the harsh realities of our time, take those realities and multiply them, envisioning a future in which the division between the haves and have-nots reaches epic proportions. Against their dramatic landscapes, they each in different ways explore the fall-out from quests for immortality. The key to the success of such explorations? Moira and Sanem will let you in on that secret.

Sanem will be signing copies of LiGa in the Book Mart immediately after the session.

SmartYellow™ publication as eBook
Aug 6 – Aug 7 all-day

SmartYellow™, the first speculative fiction novel from J.A. Christy, will be published in an eBook edition on the 7th August 2015. A worryingly plausible and chilling glimpse into an alternate Britain where, for the sake of order and for the benefit of more fortunate members of society, those seen as socially undesirable are marked with SmartYellow™, making it easier for them to be controlled and maintained in a state of fruitless inactivity.

Artwork: Leosaysays

SmartYellow™ is the story of a young girl, Katrina Williams, who finds herself on the wrong side of social services. After becoming pregnant with only a slight notion of the father’s identity, she is disowned by her parents and goes to live on a social housing estate. Before long she is being bullied by a gang involved in criminal activity and anti-social behaviour. Seeking help from the authorities she is persuaded to return to the estate to work as part of Operation Schrödinger, alongside a surveillance specialist. But she soon realises that Operation Schrödinger is not what it seems.

Exploring themes of social inequity and scientific responsibility, J.A. Christy’s first speculative fiction novel leads her heroine Katrina to understand how probability, hope and empathy play a huge part in the flow of life and are absent in the stagnation of mere survival. As readers we also start to question how we would know if the power of the State to support and care for the weak had become corrupted into the oppression of all those who do not fit society’s norms.

SmartYellow™ will be available in popular eBook formats from all good eBook retailers.

jacavatarOn Saturday afternoon from 2-3 in the Downstairs Bar we’ll be launching SmartYellow™ by J A Christy. This offers a worryingly plausible and chilling glimpse into an alternate Britain. For the sake of order and for the benefit of more fortunate members of society, those seen as socially undesirable are marked with SmartYellow™, making it easier for them to be controlled and maintained in a state of fruitless inactivity. Writer, J A Christy, turns an understanding and honest eye not only onto the weak, who have failed to cope with life, but also onto those who ruthlessly exploit them for their own ends. At times tense and threatening, at times tender and insightful, SmartYellow™ is a rewarding and thought-provoking read.

As well as drinks and books, J A Christy will be there to read from and sign copies of her book.

Different worlds… different times. It’s what Elsewhen Press has been about since we launched our first title in 2011.

In Existence is Elsewhen we present twenty science fiction stories for you to enjoy, one from each of the following twenty great authors:
